about a loud night.

Masks muffle. Shrieking does not. Somewhere between the fog machine, the doorbell and the thing in the hedge that jumps out, Halloween is one of the louder nights your ears will have all year — and nobody ever thinks about ears until the morning after.

THREE CAUTIONS FOR THE NIGHT

I.
THE MASK
A full-face mask covers the ears as well as the face. Sound arrives late and from the wrong direction, which is a poor arrangement on a street with cars on it. Cut the ear openings, or choose a half mask.
II.
THE SCREAM
A delighted child screaming directly into an adult ear is louder than most power tools, and considerably harder to switch off. It is brief, which is what saves you. Repeated all evening, it is not.
III.
THE MORNING AFTER
Ringing that is still there at breakfast is worth a doctor, not a wait. Most of it settles. The part that does not, does not come back, and nobody tells you that in advance.

Nothing here will undo a loud night, and the cautions above are not for sale. These are the ordinary preparations for the ordinary business of dry and irritated ears in a cold month — reduced until the 1st of November, because the Department would rather you had them in the cupboard than needed them in a hurry.
