Swimmer's Ear Prevention: What to Do Before and After the Pool

Swimmer's ear — otitis externa — is an infection of the ear canal itself, distinct from the middle ear infections children get with colds. It's painful in a specific way: tugging your earlobe or pushing on the tragus hurts. That tenderness is the giveaway.
It's also largely preventable once you understand what sets it up.
Why water causes it
Water alone isn't the problem. The problem is what prolonged moisture does to the canal environment.
Your ear canal is normally slightly acidic and coated with a thin water-repellent layer of cerumen. That combination discourages bacterial overgrowth. When water sits in the canal, it dilutes and washes away that protection, raises the pH, and softens the skin. Bacteria that are normally harmless residents — pseudomonas and staph species, typically — get an environment where they can multiply.
Add any break in the skin, and you have an infection.
What raises your risk
Frequent or prolonged swimming, particularly in warm water. Humid climates. A canal that's already been stripped by over-cleaning (swabs again). Eczema or other canal skin conditions. Hearing aids or earplugs worn for long stretches. Narrow canals that hold water. And a history of previous episodes — recurrence is common.
Prevention that actually works
Get water out. After swimming or showering, tilt your head to each side and gently pull the earlobe to straighten the canal and let water drain. A hair dryer on the lowest heat setting, held well away, can help finish the job. A few drops of oil help here too, and the reason is straightforward physics: water stays put in the canal because surface tension holds it against the skin, and oil disrupts that grip so the water beads up and runs out rather than sitting there. In my experience it's often what relieves the plugged, muffled feeling people get after a swim.
Don't dig. Resist the urge to dry the canal with a swab or towel corner. You're removing the exact barrier you need and abrading skin at the same time.
Preserve the oil barrier. This is where routine care helps. Keeping the canal's protective layer intact makes it more water-repellent and more resistant to the pH shift that lets bacteria take hold. A few drops of oil a few times a week — Auil works well here — supports that barrier, particularly for regular swimmers whose canals get repeatedly washed out. Applying a few drops before you get in works on the same principle from the other direction — a canal that's already coated is one water has a harder time clinging to in the first place.
Consider fitted earplugs if you swim often, especially with a history of episodes. Custom-molded plugs seal better than generic ones.
Treat the buildup. Impacted wax traps water behind it. Keeping wax soft and moving reduces that risk.
A note on alcohol-based drying drops: over-the-counter drying drops (often alcohol and acetic acid) are widely used by swimmers and can be effective. But they should never be used if you have or might have a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, or an active infection — and they can worsen already-dry, irritated canals. Ask your provider whether they fit your situation.
When to stop preventing and start treating
See a clinician promptly for ear pain — especially pain on tugging the ear, drainage, significant hearing loss, swelling of the canal, fever, or spreading redness around the ear. Swimmer's ear typically needs prescription antibiotic drops; it doesn't reliably clear on its own, and untreated cases can become considerably more serious, particularly in people with diabetes or compromised immunity. That population should seek care early and not wait.
Oil drops are for prevention and maintenance. They are not a treatment for an active infection.

Can I get swimmer's ear from a shower?
Yes, though less commonly. Any prolonged moisture can set it up.
Should I use drops every time I swim?
For most casual swimmers, drying the ears properly is enough. If your ears feel plugged or muffled afterward, a few drops before and after swimming clears trapped water and usually settles that sensation. Does oil actually get water out of the ear?
Yes. Water clings inside the canal by surface tension, and oil is hydrophobic — it breaks that adhesion, so the water loses its hold and drains when you tilt your head. It also softens wax that has swollen with water, which is frequently the real reason an ear feels blocked after swimming. What oil does not do is treat an infection. Pain, tenderness on tugging the ear, or drainage is a different problem and needs to be seen.

How long does it take to resolve?
With appropriate treatment, usually improving within a few days and resolved in a week or so. Slower or worsening courses need re-evaluation.
